Golden Trout – A Fun and Challengesome Fish to Catch

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced fisherman, golden trout are a fun, challenging fish to catch. These small sized members of the trout family are easy to spot with their olive-green backs and bright red-to-gold sides and belly during the spring spawning season.

Where to catch golden trout

To find these beautiful fish, head to a lake or river that is at a high altitude, usually in scenic mountain areas that can only be reached by backpacking. These lakes are typically cold and clear with little weed growth, which is the optimal habitat for this species.

How to catch golden trout

A standard spinning rod and reel with spinners, spoons, or live bait is ideal for this species. Fishing near shorelines is also quite productive, and can be especially effective with light or ultra-lightweight tackle.

Baitfishing is another option for this species, and you can use midges, insects, caddisflies, salmon eggs, small crustaceans and worms. You can also use lures or fly fishing, but be prepared for a lot of work, as these fish are very finicky.

Golden trout spawn in the spring or early summer in high-altitude streams and in late to early-to-mid-summer in lake waters. Females dig several nests and lay their eggs in them. The eggs hatch in about 20 days, and fry are released in two weeks.

This regal fish has undergone numerous twentieth century translocations and established populations exist in many Western states, including California, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Washington, Colorado, and Wyoming. Despite these efforts, unhybridized ‘pure’ California golden trout are much less abundant in their native range than they once were.
